Ballet Class Descriptions:

Creative Movement class offers opportunities for young dancers age 3-4 to move together in

different ways. Often using imaginative play, students are led through developmental movement

patterns that help balanced brain development and lay a foundation for dance steps. Ballet moves

like plié and tendu are introduced in a fun, relaxed environment.

Preballet is a more focused class for ages 5-6. Students practice following directions and

working as a group, and begin learning to count music and develop a sense of rhythm. They start

simple barre work, stretch together, enjoy some imaginative play, and take turns crossing the

floor with skips, gallops, leaps, and ballet walks.

Ballet 1 is a full ballet class for ages 7 and up.  Here, students become familiar with the basic

steps they will need as they move through the higher levels.

Ballet 2 (by placement) In Ballet 2, students begin to work with one hand on the barre and learn

more steps in center.  They do simple turns and an increased amount of balancing and relevé in

preparation for pirouettes.

Ballet 3 (by placement) builds on the skills learned in Ballet 2.  Different facings of the body

(croisé, effacé, en face), the difference between en dehors and en dedans, pirouettes and more

petit allegro steps are introduced.  Students are expected to attend class at least twice per week.

Ballet 4 (by placement) has longer, more complicated combinations, with students working

towards multiple pirouettes, higher extensions and incorporating épaulement.  Students in this

level may be invited to begin pointe work.  Class attendance is three days per week.

Ballet 5 (by placement) continues the work done in Ballet 4, and more advanced steps such as

renversé and petite allegro with beats are introduced.  Some Ballet 5 classes may include

wearing pointe shoes for center.  Class meets three to four days per week.

Ballet Production Requirements:

+ for Ballet 1 and 2 dancers, at least one class a week

+ for Ballet 3 dancers, at least two classes a week

+ for Ballet 4 dancers en pointe and ballet 5 dancers en pointe, at least three classes a week
